He is best known for his roles in the films Cabaret (1972), The Three Musketeers (1973), Logan's Run (1976), and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997). He has also appeared in numerous television series, including The Forsyte Saga (1967–68), The Avengers (1968–69), and The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992–93). York was born in Fulmer, Buckinghamshire, England, the son of Florence Edith May (née Maynard) and Joseph Gwynne Johnson. He was educated at Bromsgrove School, Rydal School, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. York has been married twice. His first marriage was to Patricia McCallum in 1966; they had two children before divorcing in 1974. He married his second wife, photographer Patricia McCallum, in 1976.
