She was born on 20 March 1966 in Kolkata in the Gujarati Hindu family. Her mother Shubha Yagnik was also a singer.
Alka started singing on programs for the All India Radio in Kolkata from the age of just 6. When she was 10 years old, her mother brought her to Mumbai so that she could earn opportunities as a child singer.
